MLA Dan Williams Highlights Palliative Care Funding in Alberta Budget
(Edmonton, AB: October 24,2019): Dan Williams, MLA for Peace River highlighted the commitments made by the United Conservative Government to funding palliative care in the province. The budget promised to increase funding specifically for palliative care by $20 million over the next four years which will help provide needed relief to those suffering from chronic conditions.
“I’ve heard loud and clear from my constituents that better palliative care must be a priority for our new government,” said Williams. “With our funding increases in the 2019 budget, I am thrilled to see that palliative care will be responsibly funded.”
Palliative care has been shown to improve quality of life for patients and their family members. Statistics show that more than 85% of Canadians do not have access to essential palliative care.
“There is a wide consensus that an increase in palliative care funding in Alberta is the most important investment we can make for Albertans nearing end of life,” stated Williams. “There is no doubt that this increase in funding will make a measurable difference for many Albertans in end-of-life care and allow them to do so with genuine dignity.”
Palliative and End of Life Care services are delivered by Alberta Health Services in the province.
